How safe is the ice?

With the mild early winter in our region and the unseasonably warm day yesterday, keep in mind that before venturing out onto the lake, you need to know:
how safe is the ice?

The safety of the ice is primarily determined by it’s thickness but as the video from the Insurance Bureau of Canada notes,  not all thick ice is safe.

To be truly safe, make sure that the ice is clear blue.

The attached chart indicates the safe thickness( in inches) of ice for various methods of travel.

Always remember to err on the side of caution.  If in doubt about the safety of the ice,  stay off.

Tips on how to keep your basement dry

With increasingly severe weather, basement flooding has become a common problem.  Thunderstorms with heavy rain in a short period of time, as well as heavier snowfall with faster run off can create basement havoc.

There are many simple steps you can take to protect your property

Some of the least expensive include:

-Keep storm sewer grates clear

-Reduce home water use during heavy rainfalls

-Maintain your eaves troughs and downspouts

-Avoid storing items directly on the basement floor

-Have downspouts discharge away from the foundation

Other, more costly precautions can include:

-Mainline backwater valve

-Sump pumps

-Lot grading

-New weeping tile

-Window wells and window well covers
